Understanding plans in Orb

What are plans in Orb?

Plans in Orb are structured pricing templates you can assign to your customers. Each plan outlines how billing will be managed, incorporating a variety of pricing strategies tailored to your product’s needs. For example, you might offer:

  • Free Plan: Limited features with no charges.

  • Starter Plan: A basic paid plan for new customers.

  • Growth Plan: More advanced features at a higher price.

Prices on plans

A key component of any plan is its prices. You can add multiple prices to a plan, combining usage-based and fixed pricing.

  • Usage-based prices take the quantity calculated by the billable metric and convert it to a real-world currency using a specified pricing model.

  • Fixed fee prices are charged regardless of usage. Fixed fee prices are useful for subscription fees, platform access charges, or other recurring costs.

Additional plan setup

After defining the prices, additional settings can be applied to further customize how subscriptions function under a plan:

  • Phases: You can define different phases for a plan. For example, a plan may start with a free 30-day trial phase that automatically converts to a paid version once the trial ends.

  • Discounts: Apply percentage or fixed amount discounts to specific prices or across the entire invoice for a promotional offer or incentive.

  • Allocations: Allocate a specific amount of a resource or currency to customers subscribed to the plan (e.g., $100 of free credits for the first billing cycle).

  • Minimums and Maximums: Set a minimum or maximum charge for either a specific usage price or for the entire billing cycle. This ensures that customers are charged within predefined limits, even if their usage is minimal or excessive.
